Exercise 19. Diagonals in Elements of design

Diagonal lines in Photography.

Diagonal straight lines convey a message of strength, and create a sense of tension and movement.  They can be found in many man made structures.
They are considered more visually dynamic, sweeping across any area of an image and in any direction creating the dynamic feeling from the diagonal line.
They are easy to create in a photograph by altering the angle and creating a different perspective, as we hold our camera when capturing an image.

In this exercise I am to take 4 photographs which show a strong use of diagonals lines.

Wind Tower Muttrah

By looking directly upwards and seeing a different perspective of the wind tower, I managed to create an image showing many strong diagonal lines.  From the position I was standing in and the framing used I was able to create an image where the negative space creates an interesting form. The diagonal lines from the right create a dynamic feel, they guide the eye and are a frame to the negative space.

Sky scrapper - Cape Town

Tension and movement created here by the perspective created with angle of view.
The window cleaners suspended on cables suspended from roof, add to the tension in this image.  The men suspended and the reflection create a well balanced photograph, keeping in mind the rule of thirds.
The linear perspective is created by the low angle of view, my lens and vantage point.   These two combinations have created diagonal lines from what should be horizontal and prominent vertical lines.
The lines in this image grab the attention and are very strong, they divide the picture into three naturally and create a powerful composition.

Grouping of trees

Standing directly below the overhead branches and shooting directly above me, the converging lines come together in the centre of this image, creating diagonals.
The converging lines have resulted in an abstract composition.

Ancient art with a modern slant.
 Wahiba Sands

Supported and held at angle by organically formed concrete base and solid wooden post, this ancient door represents a glimpse into the past.  Highly decorated carved and studded doors, one falling open to allow a view through to the sand dunes in background.  The broken door, hangs perilously at an angle, the other fixed within the frame it is held.  The solid door frame is set within the horizontal framing of the image, creating several diagonal lines that sweep upwards and outwards guiding the eye to the left and the right, creating a dynamic feeling and acting as a frame.
This type of wooden door has strong history in Oman, and can still be found in many homes.

Very little enhancement was given to this photograph, it was cropped to create a tighter framing of the door and tension.  A blue sky was added and a little darkening was added to the door with the burn tool,  adding impact and contrast.  This was all created in photoshop.
